HOLD ON Score, Excerpt:

All four pieces work through the individual decisions of the players. Only the tempo, mood and length of the pieces are determined in advance. The way in which the musicians find common ground – and also play against each other – is based on their own decisions. In this way, each performer expresses their own ‘individual protest’.

Musikong Bumbong are Filipino marching bands that use woodwind instruments that are made of Bamboo. The shapes and the sizes are similar to brass band instruments but have different sounds. Some of the instruments use a kazoo as a sound generator.

The musical phenomenon Musikong Bumbong, which emerged in the Philippines during the active period of the Katipunan, officially known as the Kataastaasang, represents the basis of the project. Kataastaasang (English: Supreme and Honorable Association of the Children of the Nation) was one Filipino Revolutionary Society founded in Manila in 1892, their main goal was to gain independence from Spain through a revolution. Besides their function for playing musical protest songs, the instruments were also used to smuggle weapons for the armed resistance.

Instruments were built especially for the compositions.
Curated and invited by German-Filipino artist Tintin Patrone.
